# Largest Bitcoin Theft in History Sparks Concerns over Cryptocurrency Security

Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, reported that it has been compromised. By any estimates, the hack is considered the largest crypto theft ever and emerging evidence has pointed towards a familiar attacker. This attack reveals the vulnerability to state-actor attacks.

Right as the markets closed on October 29th, hackers were able to gain access into Binance's servers. Within 20 minutes, they walked away with over $6.3 Billion in cryptocurrency. In an initial report into what went wrong, the world’s largest crypto exchange detailed a sophisticated hacking endeavor that began with an advertisement for a tampered version of a coding tool in June and set in chain a series of security breaches that culminated in the theft of the crypto on Oct. 29.[(1)](https://www.nbcnews.com/business/markets/binance-hack-fake-job-interview-heist-rcna607238)

Based on preliminary analysis, the hackers were teste this complex attack on compromised wallets before the main attack. Preparation began at least 36 hours before the theft. The attacker's operator wallet received three small withdrawals from Tornado Cash, a service that obscures where crypto comes from, starting the morning of October 28. Early on October 29, the operator deployed a first piece of code for the attack and tested it on two wallets. Later that day, it rehearsed the final version on a third wallet, then routed the test funds back to itself. Four hours after that rehearsal, the same code was installed on a Binance hot wallet. When the hack was discovered, they moved quickly to freeze over $3 billion in assets. On Saturday, Binance promised that all the funds lost would be covered and over 90 percent had done so. In a statement from Binance, they said “We continue purchasing the remaining affected stolen assets through market and OTC channels. The outstanding 10% consists of tokens outside the top ten listed above. These assets are less liquid, which means they may take longer to source in the required amounts. We are working with industry partners to complete the remaining acquisitions and will provide further updates as progress continues.

Separately, we have taken a new Proof of Reserve (PoR) snapshot at 2026-10-31 00:00 (UTC), and this has already been updated on the [PoR website](https://www.binance.com/en/proof-of-reserves). The snapshot provides an updated view of assets that are fully accounted for and is part of our ongoing commitment to transparency. The full zero-knowledge proof takes approximately 40 to 50 hours to generate due to the computational workload, so users holding any of these ten tokens can independently verify that their assets are at a minimum 1:1 backed once the full proof is generated. When the investigation into this hack began, it became obvious who was to blame. This was confirmed by the FBI on Saturday that all of the attack vectors in the hack were consistent with North Korean-backed hacking teams, specifically the group called TraderTraitor. This group was responsible for over $5.5 Billion in crypto losses in 2025 alone, including a $1.5 billion breach of the exchange Byhat. [(4)](https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/north-korean-hackers-linked-crypto-thefts-among-worlds-best-experts-say-2026-10-30/)

Crypto expert Ari Redbord said he expects the hackers will break the stolen assets into pieces and try to launder them through smaller exchanges to evade detection, a process that could unfold over months.

"It's bank robbery, in this case, at the speed of the Internet," said Redbord, chief policy officer at blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs. "However, we can also track and trace those funds in real time in order to build investigations, to disrupt and to seize back funds."

He added: "It's just this cat and mouse game." [(5)](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/fbi-says-north-korea-was-behind-6-3-billion-binance-heist-the-biggest-crypto-hack-in-history)

The reaction to the hack was immediate. By November 3rd, over $7 Billion had been pulled from Binance, even though the company said the losses were coverable. In addition, at the time of the hack, $3 Billion were frozen unable to be touched. By many estimates, this was the largest Bitcoin heist ever, easily tripling the Byhat hack the same group pulled last year and raising concerns about the Wild West nature of these exchanges and how easily malicious actors like North Korea can manipulate and steal from them.

Binance’s $6.3 billion hack is the largest of its kind and will inevitably lead to bigger ones in the future. The complex nature of the attack and signs pointing towards a state-backed group remind people that many of the largest hacking groups in the world are in fact, state-sponsored. The same complexity also means that the money is also gone. While the money was covered this time, they might not be so lucky in the future as hacking get more complex and coordinated.
