Several employees from Axis Insurance Services, LLC attended the annual CUMAC volunteer celebratory breakfast at the Paterson Museum on April 26th. This breakfast was to celebrate CUMAC's volunteer staff and sponsors as they continue to their mission to help those in need in Passaic County, New Jersey. Attending the Breakfast were CEO Mike Smith along with Vice President Heather Verdui, Drew Smith, Joe Ferri, Kristen Westerduin and Kiara Guzman.
CUMAC Echo, or the Center of United Methodist Aid to the Community Ecumenically Concerned with Helping Others, is a non-profit food pantry serving the food dependent population based in Paterson New Jersey. The group helps those who are less fortunate with food donated by local stores and individual donators. Most of the individual help is done by volunteers who devoted over 4500 combined hours in 2023 alone. Also being celebrated at this breakfast was their first Wooden Spoon award, an award given to those dedicated to their cause. The inaugural honor went to Gene Bilz, a longtime volunteer, dedicating over 30 years to the organization.
Joe Ferri when asked about the company’s participation had this to say, “We wanted to thank CUMAC for having us at the volunteer appreciation breakfast this April. We were honored to be a part of it and are excited to continue our volunteer efforts with such an amazing organization."
About CUMAC
CUMAC began its mission in the late 1970s when Hugh Dunlop, a Paterson teacher, noticed that his students could not focus in school due to a lack of adequate nutrition. With the helping hands of his church congregation, he began to collect food donations and started to chip away at the problem of hunger with his students and meet their needs. Hugh soon realized that the problem he saw among his students extended far beyond his classroom, was and still is embedded in the community. A small pantry was created in Paterson to start alleviating this burden on individuals and families in his community.
In 1985, the Center of United Methodist Aid to the Community Ecumenically Concerned with Helping Others, CUMAC/ECHO, was incorporated.
